Takeo Izama was born to Hiro Izama and Athena in Kyoto Japan in 1993. Hiro was a son of Ares and as such highly skilled martial artist and was well known throughout the land for his skill. However, soon, the demigod was cast out of the village after Hiro engaged a diplomat in combat after making sexual advances on his cousin. Hiro was outraged, but respected the wishes of his people and left Kyoto for Tokyo.
Takeo's father was always hard on him and his brother, Koji about everything they did. The way they would walk, the way they would talk, nothing they did was right or good enough for him. The one thing they would always excel at, however, was kung fu. They pieced together a mastery from a myriad of different sources, such random dojos he found around town, and what little they could convince their father to show them. Despite the extraordinary skill Takeo and Koji exhibited as martial artists, their father still always found faults in their form, often challenging and mercilessly beating them in combat.
When the boys were 12 years old, their home was attacked by harpies, Hiro chose not to fight and allowed them to fight them. Koji, over-thinking the situation, overestimated a harpy's positioning, leaving him open to a fatal attack. Before the harpy could slaughter him, Takeo jumped in the way, saving his brother's life, but leaving him wounded. Seeing Takeo hurt, Koji did for the first time what he calls "phase-shifting", and went into a blind rage, mercilessly beat the harpies into submission, and killed them with the sword Hiro gave to him, Salamadras. After their "Sloppy work" as Hiro called it, he became even harder on them. Even as the monster attacks became more and more frequent, Hiro would not yet allow them to come to camp, and used the attacks as a means of training his sons to be strong.
It would years, when the boys were 17 that he would even consider allowing them to come to camp, and travelled with them into America. The monster attacks were even more frequent than in Japan yet with the three of them, they were able to fairly easily hold them off.
Not far from Long Island, the three were attacked by the hydra. Koji, trying to think on his feet, used his slight knowledge of the myth and lit a torch and tried to burn its head off to no avail, as Takeo repeatedly sliced off its heads. Hiro tried to compensate for his sons, but was soon ripped apart by the hydra's now 20 heads. As Koji dropped the torch on the stubs of around 8 heads, he saw that they didn't grow back. He then yelled to his brother to keep slicing the heads and went to retrieve the torch. As Takeo saw a head snap at Koji, he sliced at it, but at an improper angle and it didn't cut all the way through. The head bit Koji's side and he fell to his knees. He then lifted the torch and threw it at the monster, burning more of the nubs until there were only three heads left. One snapped at Koji, and he leaped up and crushed its skull under his feet. Another head did the same to Takeo and he repeated his brother's manoeuvre. For the last head, Takeo slashed it off and Koji burned the nub with the torch, then stabbed the body in its chest, and it turned to gold dust. The boys from then on blamed each other for their father's death, creating friction between them. They hobbled up the nearby hill and crossed camp borders, immediately being claimed by their mother, Athena. It was months before the twins finally reconciled and became friends again.
